Nostalgic Neurons

This is so cute, I have to post it. Useful for flashing at internet trolls and imbeciles.

Received the invites for Thievery Corporation.
Velvet was packed to capacity.
Saw Dawn there, an ex-student and basketball-player from Yu Ying Secondary School; she was only Sec 2 when I was attached there in 1993! Well, she has blossomed.

Random things that have happened during my blog hiatus:

Finally, the Godfather has landed on our shores. I was lucky enough to be invited to an afternoon tea session with the CEO of Panerai (Angelo Bonati), at the unearthly hour of 4pm on a Monday and at the unearthly venue of Raffles Marina in Tuas. Well, any Paneristi worth his watches would never give up this chance of course, so off I went after school (luckily, there wasn't any English remedial on that Monday).
Took a photo with Bonati, and got him to autograph my 2004 Agenda and Panerai Style Book II. The mussels, scallops and tiramisu there were great.
Yu-Ying of Tang Quartet got himself a second Panerai after the event, the PAM 88 (GMT)!

I am now using MSN far more than ICQ. Heck, I've ditched ICQ for MSN.

I have put on weight. On the other hand, the satay beehoon at Blk 85 food centre is great. My standard order is $3 minus the cuttlefish, and the plate will be full of ingredients such as cockles, pork slices, liver slices, tau pok... yummy. Best is to go there from 5 - 6pm to beat the crowd.

Beverly Morata (don't u like that name, it hints of the Japanese blood in her) has made it as a wildcard into the Singapore Idol finals! Yes, my money is on her.

I have a new cycling buddy, Alvin, who works at Parkway Nanyang Optical. He rides a Cannondale with slick-tires.

Thievery Corporation is playing at Velvet on Wednesday for Heineken Green Room Sessions. And I have not received the invites, maybe cos I was late in requesting. I may just show up at Velvet and beg the pretty ladies in charge there; they decide who gets in or who does not.

Horrors. 150m.com has deleted my entire site because it 'contained illegal files'. No, I'm NOT keeping pornographic pictures of children on that site, I repeat: I'm NOT keeping pornographic pictures of children on that site. It's just that I'm not allowed to keep any zip files in the server, and well, a robot scanned my directory, found 1 or 2 zip files which I've left there for the benefit of the public, and robot promptly deleted the site.
Here's my new address: http://kommissar.250free.com
Luckily, my blog is still intact. Sadly, the pictures are now gone :(
Nevermind. At least I can still continue to blog on this space.

My favourite Singapore Idol contestant Joanna Dong (or is it Joanne), the one who was tagged as looking too 'aunty' in the auditions, did not make it to the finals! And she's not even in the Wildcard round, grrrrrr. Well, at least she had a great makeover. That red dress was hot.
My money is on Beverly Morata. Although she did not go through the second round, she's in the Wildcard round. Saw her wildcard performance which suitably impressed the judges, but did not catch the results. I'm sure she got in. I already know that she has talent, cos I saw her win in an episode of Asia Bagus by singing Sandy Lam's Shang Hen, yes, in Mandarin.

Backblog time:

28 Aug, Sat:
Went with Kenneth Ho to the Tempus Appreciation Dinner hosted by Michael Tay (son of Jenny 'The Hour Glass' Tay) at his own private residence. It was the Mother of all dinner parties, as you can guess. Kenneth was kind enough to pick me up from town. 40A Nassim Rd turned out to be these 2 houses (or should I say low buildings) situated on a hilltop, definitely not your typical terrace house. The two structures were linked by staircases and a shallow pool water-feature. Car-parking was this big grass patch in front of the gates. Now, it seems that this house was given to Michael Tay by his parents as a wedding gift. If the son stays in this kind of house, what kind of house must Dr Kenny Tay and Jenny Tay live in? Hmmm.

The buffet spread was held on the huge patio, and it was not your typical buffet spread. Cooks were at every station to cook/prepare the food right in front of your eyes (apparently they are from Hyatt Hotel) and serve fresh to you. It kind of resembled the Penang Hawker-fare concept that is so popular at York Hotel. What I had: the biggest, fattest peeled steamed prawns I've seen, sliced roast beef, hokkien mee, char kway teow, roast duck, chicken rice chicken, chunky char siew. Didn't touch the rock oysters. Free flow of champagne, beer, wine.

The following 3 photos were taken by someone else.
Pic of fellow-Purist Roger Tsai, and his mum. You can see the buffet stations behind them :

For the presentation of tokens of appreciation to the various heads of watch brands participating in Tempus, everyone adjourned to this huge air-conditioned tent with this jazz band playing on stage (I'm on the left of this pic) :

Group photo. Red arrow - Philippe Dufour with pipe. He's one of the most highly-regarded watch-makers in the world. His watches are exquisitely crafted by himself to perfection, and yes, they fetch astronomical prices, even for the basic pieces.
Pink arrow - Dolly, wife of Dr Bernard Cheong. She was wearing The Freak by Ulysse Nardin!
Blue arrow - Me.
Green arrow - the goateed Michael Tay, son of Jenny Tay. A young punk to some, but you have to give him credit for his vision in kick-starting Tempus.
Yellow arrow - Dr Thomas Mao, owner and founder of thePuristS.com . He was wearing Audemars Piguet La Boutique!

27 Aug, Fri:
Met for dinner with my NUS Microbiology course-mates at City Hall, and yes, you guessed it, I took the opportunity to visit Tempus again, to drool properly this time. But before that, I popped into Bras Basah Complex to pick up this very cool wall-clock designed to resemble a Citizen 200m dive-watch! With luminous markers too, ain't that dandy.
Meeting place for dinner was a crepes place at City Link, but after I remarked that crepes isn't considered real food by me, the group promptly decided to adjourn to nearby Purvis street for Chin Chin hainanese chicken rice and breaded pork chops. Yay! On our table as well were black pepper beef and mutton soup (I didn't touch that one as it was herbal, yucks). In all, a most satisfying meal. Saw Aaron there too, and gave him positive feedback on the lizard strap.

26 Aug, Thur:

Been looking forward to this day for a long time. 'Panemania - Perspectives on the Allure of Panerai Watches' at a Swissotel function room was hosted today by the good people of The Hour Glass, in conjunction with 'Tempus', the major watch exhibition organised to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Hour Glass. Speakers at Panemania were Dr Ralph Stanley (so he's the big guy I saw at the Vacheron Constantin dinner who was enquiring about the Toledo; the guy Jenny told me about), Pegan, Chua, and the ever-knowledgeable Ng Tjeng Jaw. In a nutshell, the first 3 speakers spoke about stuff which we all already know, the reasons why they love Panerai, etc etc, while Jaw gave the most objective discourse on the allure of Panerai. Jaw rationalised that in the end, buying a watch is an emotional process; one buys the watch that speaks to your heart. He also asked this question: would we still buy Panerai if one day, they increase their production numbers?

And finally, the buffet spread. Quite a nice spread of finger food: the one to go for was the scallops, which were huge, fresh and delicious; I never had so many scallops before at one seating. Dessert was good too: tiramisu in a cup, some Rocher-like chocolate dessert, etc.

Dear big Jonathan was kind enough to pass me his extra Panerai tote-bag (he had 2 from the HK boutique). I also took a pic with Fabien, the GM of Panerai, Richemont Singapore; he wears a 40mm Panerai by the way. As we departed, goodie bags were distributed to us, consisting of a nifty Panerai shopping bag with the 2004 catalog and the new Panerai tee inside (I finally have a Panerai shopping bag!). Picked up my lizard strap from Aaron after the event as well; it looked good! Yu-ying, of Tang Quartet fame, picked up a tan bull-stomache strap from him on the spot. As you can guess, I went home happy that night.

Fabien and me:

The Radiomir 8 Days, with 8-day power reserve, that's efficiency for you! :

I'm gonna tote that Panerai tote-bag around, and I don't care if people say it looks aunty.

Oh, before Panemania, I visited Tempus of course. Sharon Mei looked as fetching as ever at the Jaeger LeCoultre booth, which was right opposite the Panerai booth. Spoke to Jimmy Peh of Piaget too, since he recognised me from the Vacheron dinner.

Simply had to take a pic with this watch-making great-- Vianney Halter!:

The Antiqua, a most distinct Vianney masterpiece:

Finally saw the Harry Winston Opus III in real life, another Vianney mechanical marvel, with 6 jumping counters! :

The Panerai booth, designed to resemble their boutiques:

The JLC Gyrotourbillon; costs about a cool S$500,000 :
